[M4IF Technotes] synchronization between streams

Hi, all,
I have some questions about synchronization between streams in MPEG4.
Suppose a host has an audio source and a video source, my questions are :
1. After video and audio being encoded, they are transmitted as
individual streams? or they are multiplexed into a composite stream and
delivered through the network as a single stream?
2. At the receiver, how the synchronization between the audio and video
stream is implemented?
